About two hours north of Tokyo is the city of Nikko, the famous shrines and temples in Nikko National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site are. I have made on Thursday with two friends on the long trip (by Kawasaki from it takes about three and a half hours) and I considered including the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu and his grandson Iemitsu, the first and third shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty. Unlike most other temples and shrines in Japan, the buildings in Nikko are decorated with detailed and colorful carvings, which are based clearly on the Chinese model. In Nikko, there is the famous carving of three wise monkeys, I have already mentioned in the last post. This is part of a small picture book showing the life of a young monkey.
The whole place is huge and Beautifully situated in the forest. Unfortunately, it was really cold, so that after a few hours than we had seen all that, quickly ate a hot ramen and have then warmed in a small tea room.

On Saturday I was also in China Town in Yokohama, since today is Chinese New Year. That's pretty wound touristy, there are really only restaurants, grocery stores and souvenir shops. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting and beautiful area. Since the Festivities begin there probably until today, I have unfortunately seen a parade with dragons, but because the ceremony is to take two weeks, I have yet to opportunity. In the end we are in a Chinese restaurant and have eaten a 16-course menu, with things I have seen in Chinese restaurants in Germany before. Including jellyfish and pig's stomach. Contrary to German faith in China to eat only rice if you want to be cheap and fast enough, include regular meals in the restaurant rarely rice.
